Proudly independent, Kill Your Darlings (KYD) is Australia’s most lively and entertaining cultural publication. KYD was founded in 2010 by Rebecca Starford and Hannah Kent, and today it comprises a quarterly edition, a website and blog, regular events series, a writers workshop and an online shop.
Publishing essays, commentary, interviews, fiction and reviews, as well as regular opinion-pieces and columns, KYD is committed to feisty new writing unafraid of pulling punches across all genres. Generating discussion, testing boundaries and, most importantly, not taking ourselves too seriously, we delight in reporting on both high- and low-brow culture. Meaning we enjoy publishing writing as diverse as the politics of climate change to why everyone’s so down on bestselling novel Eat, Pray, Love…
Our name, ‘Kill Your Darlings’ comes from the quote regularly attributed to the great American novelist William Faulkner. Strong editorial values drives KYD: a passion for the written word, the integrity of the writer and their ideas, as well as commissioning and publishing writing that challenges, entertains and delights our readers. We’re always on the hunt for stories, ideas and opinions that have been overlooked in the ever-shrinking mainstream media.
KYD enjoys the support of the Australia Council’s Literature Board, in which yearly funding is directed towards paying our talented writers. Arts Victoria is another generous supporter, allocating funding towards the production of our gorgeous print edition.
Contributors to KYD range from established and celebrated literary and cultural identities to the newest emerging talent. Over the years we have published works from Gideon Haigh, Hannah Kent, Benjamin Law, Krissy Kneen, Carmel Bird, Ron Rash, Monica Dux, Sophie Cunningham, Diego Marani, Ben Eltham, Clementine Ford, Jo Case, Estelle Tang, Bethanie Blanchard, Rebecca Harkins-Cross, Debra Adelaide, Jon Bauer, Daniel Ducrou, Carmen Callil, Paul Capsis, Antony Loewenstein, Wayne Macauley, Laura-Jean McKay, Andrew Mueller, Ben Pobjie, Amy Espeseth, Chris Flynn, Leanne Hall, Michael Sala, Fiona Scott-Norman, Toni Jordan, Chris Womersley, Maria Tumarkin, Sam Twyford-Moore and Emmett Stinson. For information on submissions, see here.
KYD is dedicated to producing the quarterly print and online edition, which is published January, April, July and October of each year. But we’re also aware you’re hungry for great reading online. So we’re constantly expanding our website, to include more content from Australia’s best writers. Other aspects of our program include events, the KYD Writers Workshop, as well as the KYD Shop.
And finally, Kill Your Darlings is fully independent. We rely on the funding from government bodies as well as from sales and subscriptions, to keep publishing Australian writers. If you like what you read, please consider subscribing.
