The Sydney Writers’ Festival at the Wheeler Centre: double passes up for grabs!
This competition has closed.
Some of the biggest names at this year’s Sydney Writers’ Festival will be coming to Melbourne to take part in the Wheeler Centre’s eclectic new series, Ten Writers, Five Double-Bills. Luckily for us, the Wheeler Centre has very generously given Kill Your Darlings ten double passes to give away. To go into the running, simply tell us in the comments field which pair you would like to see and why. We’ll announce the winners Thursday, May 10. Good luck!

Pádraig Ó Tuama, my Irish friend and mentor, heard Jeanette Winterson recently, and was so moved that he’s not spoken about much else since. I’d love to do the same. There’s something particular about her for people brought up in the church.

I would love to see Stella Rimington and Hisham Matar so I can find out more about the world of intelligence and impress my friends be pretending that Stella was my mentor.

I will die if I don’t see Chad Harbach and Jeanette Winterson. I will.

You and me both, Julie. I am desperate. KYD, please … save us. Only you can.

I will Die Harder, with a vengeance, than both of you if I can’t get me some Chad Harbach tickets.

I need to see Sjón and Roddy Doyle because “The Commitments” changed my life. It made me love soul music, inspired me to get singing lessons, and convinced me to incorporate “Rabbit” into the name of my first-born child.

N+1 is one of the first things I check in the morning while waiting for my toast to become appropriately toast like. I’m really interested to hear first hand the writing process involved in The Art of Fielding.
Jeanette Winterson ignoring the whole evangelical lesbian early life quandary, which is intensely interesting in itself, her ability to play with and disregard genre conventions makes me quite a fan. The Stone Gods was a great read, postmodern sci fi goes down well in my books.
I would love to hear what the Wheeler Centre can bring out of both of them. I’ve seen Jenny Niven a few times and she is a great interviewer.

I would love to see Sjón and Roddy Doyle. I must have read “Paddy Clarke Ha ha ha” five times growing up and Roddy Doyle was without a doubt one of the first authors to inspire my love of fiction with a strong sense of place. I now work as a translator and am always grappling with issues of culture and context in my work so Sjón sounds right up my alley though I’ve not read anything he’s written.

I want to see Eugenides and the other guy! Mostly it’s because I can say his name correctly and also I’d like to ask him if he’s happy with that latest author pic in the natty vest looking like a Tarantino star. Secondarily, I’d like to go because I can’t believe no one else has called dibs on this session. Tertiarily, the blurb on Cody says he ‘breaks taboos.’ Given he’s a 20-something dude who wrote a memoir, I find this hard to believe. Ergo, I’d like to put the New York Lit Scene raves to the test.

I would love to see Dava Sobel and Barbara Arrowsmith-Young – despite hating science at school, I’ve developed a real love for it now, mainly thanks to such inspiring writers.
I love how great writers can make challenging subjects so engaging and make you wonder what was so challenging about them in the first place!

ooh! Joshua Cody and Jeffrey Eugenides, please! Because where else are you going to hear about cancer, virgins offing themselves, hemaphrodites, Jane Austen AND bookish types called Madeleine on a Tuesday night?
