Giveaway: Victoria Healy’s Independent Women Part 2 at Melbourne’s Fringe Festival
In the spring of 2000, Destiny’s Child released the #1 hit Independent Women Part 1. It was the Female Eunuch of the Girl Power Generation. Coupled with Samantha Jones’ raging sex life at 40, the future looked peachy for girls on the cusp of womanhood.
Ten years later Victoria Healy ponders what happened to those Independent Women who could pay all of their Bills, Bills, Bills.
Healy’s Independent Women Part 2 delves into the promise preached to girls at the turn of the millennium: you will be independent, you will have a brilliant sex life and most of all you will look fabulous doing it. The show is interlaced with the music and pop culture that defined the Generation.

It was all there in that moment Beyonce got into a relationship and began singing things like, ‘I can do for you what Martin did for the people [!?!], Ran by the man but the women keep the tempo … Still play my part and let you take the lead role, believe me.’ There she is submitting to her man, relishing women’s historical subjugation, all the while dancing! That was the moment we realised it had all been a big sparkle-dusted sham.
